Post-traumatic stress disorder, or Trauma , can cause untold misery in the lives of victims and those around them.
Even more tragic is that this impact goes on for several generations if left untreated, for children will pattern themselves after their parents. The cause of Trauma is an experience of severe trauma. This trauma may be found on a battlefield, in a car accident, in the wake of a natural disaster, at a crime scene, or in a home where someone is being abused, neglected, or raped – literally anywhere. Surprisingly, Trauma also occurs in those who have been in long term relationships with narcissists. What is more, the traumatic experience does not have to be lived by the victim in order for Trauma to take root. Simply witnessing or hearing about a traumatic experience is enough to send some people into Trauma . With such a broad segment of the population at risk for PTSD, how do you know if you have it?
Experiencing trauma is a part of life for everyone. At some point in time, we all will have to face something horrible. Here are some of the symptoms of Trauma .
- Avoidance of any stimulus (person, place, thing) that reminds a person about the trauma. This includes, but is not limited to, the inability to recall the trauma, feeling physical, emotional, or mental numbness, and an inability to plan long-term for oneself.
- A Heightened emotional & anxious response. This can take the form of sleeplessness or insomnia, being scared easily, panic attacks, being easily irritated, always being alert, and having difficulty concentrating.
- Re-experiencing the traumatic event through nightmares or obtrusive memories, flashbacks, and intense psychological or physical response when reminded of the event.
There are many other symptoms of TRAUMA, as well as many other disorders that co-exist with TRAUMA, such as depression, anxiety disorders, substance abuse disorders, feelings of isolation, shame, betrayal, persecution, alienation, and others. As TRAUMA can be a many-headed problem, each approach needs to be tailored to the individual and his or her specific needs.
The sooner someone comes for help with Trauma , the faster treatment will be. As Trauma usually develops with a host of other problems not just for the victim but also for those close to the victim, seeking treatment as early as possible helps take the strain out of relationships that may be pushed to the breaking point without treatment.
